The Holland Hurricanes men’s and women’s volleyball teams combined for one win in four matches against the STU Tommies in Fredericton, New Brunswick over the weekend. Both teams lost in straight sets on Saturday before the women won in five sets on Sunday with the men falling in four.

Set scores in the women’s game on Saturday were 25-23, 25-22 and 25-21 in favour of STU.

Taylor Allen and Zayley Murphy both had nine kills to lead the ‘Canes attack while Philicia Johnson added six.

Laura Ready had a match-high 31 assists and Katie Wood led the way for the ‘Canes with 17 digs in the loss. Allen had 14 digs and Murphy recorded 11 for the ‘Canes.

On Sunday, the women won by set scores of 25-20, 20-25, 26-24, 23-25, 15-9.

Allen once again led the attack, this time with 13 kills, with Murphy and Abby Hyndman both recording ten.

Ready dished out a match-high 43 assists while Allen, Murphy, and Wood all had 15 digs in the win. Hyndman and Ready both reached double digits in digs with 12 and 11 respectively.

The ‘Canes now sit at 5-3 on the season and are tied for third in the ACAA standings, while the Tommies are in a tie for fifth with a 3-6 record.

Set scores in the men’s game on Saturday were 27-25, 25-21 and 25-21 for STU.

Six players had between three and six kills for the ‘Canes led by Aaron Pugh with six and Brett Butler and Riley O’Keefe with five each.

Nicholas Menzies had 23 assists while Jeff MacDonald had ten digs in the loss. Butler and Pugh both had nine digs for the ‘Canes.

On Sunday, the men lost by set scores of 25-19, 23-25, 25-13, 25-16.

Pugh led the attack again, this time with 11 kills with MacDonald and Butler both recording ten.

Menzies had 26 assists while Zach Thibodeau and Butler had 13 and ten digs respectively in the loss.

The ‘Canes fall to 2-4 on the season and are in third place in the conference after the losses. The STU Tommies are off to a perfect 6-0 start to the season and sit atop the standings.

The women’s ‘Canes return to action this Friday night at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement when they host the Mount Allison Mounties at 7pm.

The Mounties are 7-2 on the season, four-points up on the ‘Canes; Holland College has a game in-hand.

The men’s and women’s Hurricanes will conclude the 2018 portion of their regular seasons on Sunday, December 2 when they host the UNBSJ Seawolves.

The women’s Seawolves are 5-3 and currently tied with the Hurricanes for third, while the men’s team is 3-2 and hold a two-point lead over the ‘Canes for second in the ACAA.
